How the Current Insurance Crisis May Threaten Home Values and Financial Markets

Climate change is creating growing potential financial risks as rising insurance premiums, shrinking coverage, and increasingly severe natural disasters threaten property values, mortgage markets, and investment portfolios.

Insurerstypically price coverage one year at a time, while homeowners and mortgagelenders have financial commitments that can last 30 years. As climate risksincrease, insurers are raising premiums, limiting coverage, or withdrawing fromhigh-risk areas, leaving homeowners and lenders exposed.

The biggest risk is not simply that climate change makes insurance more expensive; it is that the financial system may be underestimating the risks that insurance companies no longer cover.

For investors, pension funds, mortgage lenders, and municipal bondholders, this creates potentially significant exposure that conventional insurance and climate-risk data may not fully capture. Hear more from Jeff from the NYSE.
